Abstract
Stefan Zweig was born in Vienna on November 28, 1881. He was an Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer. Thanks to his deep psychological insight, Zweig created a lot of memorable women images. But almost all those women images were evaluated mainly from Phallocentrist perspective. So the heroines in Zweig’s novels were thought of as miserable roles. They are abnormal, mad, and deserted by the world.
This thesis tries to analyze his short story A Letter from an Unknown Woman from the perspective of feminist reading theory, which is evolved from reader response theory. Feminist reading strategy stress that a text is not easily passively admitted by the readers, but that the readers interpret the meanings of the text according to their different life experience and cultural background. Feminist reading strategy follows this trend and it tries to re-interpret and re-evaluate the women characters’ images and the relationship between male and female in literary works from feminist point of view. Based on this theory, a totally new woman image is born in Letter from an Unknown Woman. Metaphor, narrative skills and irony are three focuses in this thesis. Accordingly, the paper analyzes this novel from the three main aspects. The first aspect aims at analyzing the metaphor of stereotyped woman images. By feminist reading, the heroine becomes a brave fighter who has been struggling against patriarchal norms and has led a life of her own. The second aspect explodes the narrative skills of woman’s emotion tension. By analyzing the narrative skillswe can not only reveal the true image which the heroine want to express, but also make readers walk into the heroine’s inside world, and help readers to think as the heroine thinks. The third part probes into the analysis of irony. It illustrates how woman’s dream of an ideal romantic male image disillusioned.
All in all, the paper aims to unveil a brand-new woman image both in self consciousness and in romanticism from the perspective of feminist reading strategy.
