Translation Comparison of Cultural Images Between the English Versions of Hong Lou Meng by Yang and Hawkes 《

I. Introduction

The novel Hong Lou Meng written by the great writer Cao Xueqin in the mid-eighteenth century is a monumental work in the history of Chinese even world literature. With its main theme as the tragic love between a couple of young aristocrats, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, the novel described the decline of the social milieu of this well-known feudal aristocratic household.
As a highly artistic and cultural book which has aroused wide and incessant interest at home in readers and professionals, Hong Lou Meng’s fame quickly spread abroad. Enthusiastic scholars both home and abroad endeavored to introduce it to other cultures. From 1830 to 1986, in no more than 160 years, there were altogether nine English versions, being special and brilliant scenery in the translation history. Since Chinese and English are two varying linguistic systems and media of information and Hong Lou Meng is a Chinese feudal cultural encyclopedia, it is not uneasy to imagine how difficult the translating process could be. However, A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang and The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes and John Minford are the two versions distinguishing themselves from others according to these characteristics:completed English version, careful selection of the original version and compensation for cultural communication.
