A Study of Jack London’s Female Characters and London’s Views on Women

Title   A Study of Jack London’s Female Characters  and London’s Views on Women
Abstract
Jack London is a famous American realistic writer. Since 1900, he had published a large amount of novels and short stories, which are often related to socialism and inpidualism. At the same time, he developed an interest in sex and had specialized on sex for many years. The Sea-Wolf tells an adventure story that happens at sea, enabling readers to learn more about nature and humanity. Martin Eden is an autobiographical novel of Jack London, and it tells a story of an uneducated sailor who learns knowledge and struggles to become a writer because of his lover. This thesis mainly focuses on two female characters, Maud Brewster in The Sea-Wolf and Ruth Morse in the Martin Eden. Combining with gender theories, this thesis will analyze Jack London’s New Woman and middle-class women of 19th century. London has quite different attitudes towards them, which reflects his ambiguous and contradictory views on women.

1 Introduction
1.1    Jack London and The Sea-Wolf and Martin Eden
Born in 1876 in San Francisco, Jack London was a famous American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers who gain considerable fame around the world and make a large fortune by just writing. Since 1900, London has written and published many novels, telling the stories about the life of American people in the lower class. Deeply influenced by Nietzsche, London constantly studies the inpidualism and socialism in his works. For 16 years, London published 19 full-length novels, more than 150 short stories, 3 scripts and a large number of other forms of works. The most famous ones include The Call of the Wild (1903), The Sea-Wolf (1904), White Fang (1906), Martin Eden (1909) and “Love of Life” (1905).
