Doris Lessing is one of the most excellent and struggling contemporary British novelists, who is the oldest female Nobel Prize winners when she wins the prize. While she had written more than ten novels, one collection of poems, two dramas, seventy short stories, many papers and reminiscences. Her first novel was an immediate success as soon as published which is called The Grass Is Singing. This novel, published in England in 1950, received praise from critics and readers. From then on, she kept rising to fame on the literary world in Britain. The main two factors of her growth are the reality of Africa and interest on books.

Lessing has described her childhood as an abnormal mix of some pleasure and much pain. Her mother was very strict with her. Lessing was first sent to a convent school, and later sent to a high school without boys in the capital city. However, she soon sent down from the school. At that time she was thirteen, and it was the final result of her formal education. Recently she said her childhood was so unhappy that seemed to produce fiction writers. After she was away from school, Doris Lessing took great pleasure in books; as a result, she benefited a lot from them. So Lessing looked back upon her childhood, which is a mixture of joys and pains. When she was 19 years old, Lessing married Frank Wisdom and gave birth to two babies.
