1. Introduction

Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club is a masterpiece of Chinese American literature. Since this book was published, the mother-daughter relationship has been the focus of the study. There are many conflicts between them because they represent different cultures.

The story is about four different pairs of mother and daughter who respectively describe their life from their own angle. The mothers are all those people who escaped from China to America in the war period; the daughters are born and grew up in America. Although the daughters’ appearances are alike with their mother very much, they seem to struggle with their mother from the beginning of the story. Talking with mothers in fragile Chinese, they have no idea what their mothers want to express. When the mothers began to use the same stammer English to explain and communicate with them, they only receive their laughter and argument in public. The mothers occasionally blurted out words, which will be regarded as unwarranted and malicious speculation. The mothers all wish that their daughters can speak decent English and integrate into American society, but they don’t want them to lose the Chinese nature. The mothers can see the future of marriage is not happy and the life will not be perfect from a little freckle in the future son-in-law’s face  All these small events are unreasonable for the daughters. Finally the daughters understand the way that the mother tried to protect them. Unfortunately, when they had a better understanding of their mother from the other mother's mouth and their father’s mouth, the mothers has been old, or even died for a long time. Some haunting questions are always mysterious.
