Rewriting and Reconstruction: Translator’s Visibility and Invisibility—— on the Example of Howard Goldblatt’s Translation of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out,英语论文论文学翻译中译者的显身与隐身以《生死疲劳》

Abstract    In October, 2012, Mo Yan, a Chinese writer of “home-seeking literature”, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which can be regarded as a milestone in Chinese literature.

It not only affirms Mo Yan and his works but also arouses people’s thinking---why could Mo Yan’s works acquire international affirmation among numerous Chinese literature works? Therefore, attentions are focused on the translated versions of Mo Yan’s works as well as the translators of Mo Yan. As an essential translator of Mo Yan’s works, Howard Goldblatt has attracted great attentions.61840

Mo Yan’s works are full of rural flavor, which requires translators to master both Chinese and western culture. They need to not only understand implications of Chinese language but also find counterparts in western culture. Therefore, Howard Goldblatt applies different methods of translation to the translation of Mo Yan’s works. Based on the English version of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and the theory of Translator’s Visibility and Invisibility, this paper makes an affirmation to Goldblatt’s translation and discusses how he utilizes rewriting and reconstruction in the practice of translation to make the translated text closer to the western readers. In addition, this paper also attempts to study the impact of literary translation on cultural transmission.

This paper consists of five parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part is literature review. The third part aims at studying translator’s visibility in Goldblatt’s translation of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. The fourth part explodes the significance of translator’s visibility and invisibility in translation. The final part functions as conclusion.

Key Words: Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, Mo Yan, Howard Goldblatt, translator’s visibility, translator’s invisibility
