Abstract So far, creative treason has been employed to the translation of film subtitling, public signs, literary works and so on. Therefore based on this translation strategy, this thesis analyzes the English versions of the famous Chinese writer Shen Congwen’s Bian Cheng through analysis of a number of examples, respectively Yang Xianyi’s The Border Town. Through analysis, it is found that in the process of translating, a translator should adapt to creative treason on the dimensions of language, culture, and communication in order to reach an appropriate version. Through the research, a conclusion can be drawn that the Yang’s translation of The Border Town has its own features and is worthy of studying and that creative treason plays a guiding role in the translation work.61397

摘要“创造性叛逆”的概念已被广泛运用于电影字幕翻译、公示语翻译、文学作品翻译等。因此本文以此翻译策略为依据，通过一系列案例，分析了著名中国作家沈从文所著的《边城》的英译本，即杨宪益的译本。本文认为在翻译的过程中，译者只有在语言维、文化维、交际维上对翻译环境做出适应性选择，才能产出合适的译文。通过对杨译本《边城》的研究，认为这个译本极具特色，值得借鉴，创造性叛逆对翻译工作的进行具有有益的指导作用。

1. Introduction
“Creative treason” was initiated by a French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit in his book in 1958. （Escarpit, trans. Luo Meiting, 1988: 128-247) Robert introduces into his ethics the concept. It is creative because it gives the text a completely new look so as to offer it another chance of library interchange with a broader range of readers, and it gives the ordinary source text a new life of being a well-known masterpiece in the target language system. Novel is the essence of Chinese literature. When translating novel, the translator must have a profound literary accomplishment, and fully understand words and sentences which contain Chinese special meanings. Yang Xianyi is an experienced scholar in the translation circle in China because of some concrete images. Yang thinks translation research should conduct dynamic and macro literary and cultural research. Yang has many excellent translation works.
The translation of The Border Town is one of them. Yang employs perse translation strategies to cater for western reader's demands in the translation of The Border Town. This thesis is intended to probe into the realization of creative treason in the translation of the novelle The Border Town, by means of a detailed study of the English versions.
