Juxtaposition of memory and presence-comment on Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Da

Title   Juxtaposition of memory and presence-comment on Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day
Abstract
In Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day, many plots of the story are narrated through Stevens’s memory. And the juxtaposition of memory and presence performs an vital role in both the development of plot and portray of the protagonist’s character. This article intends to dig deep into the elements of memory in The Remains of the Day and to focus on how Ishiguro uses the juxtaposition of memory and presence as a tool to start and develop both Stevens’s story and his character in this novel. Also, this article will re-examine the role of Mr.Stevens from the perspective of New Historicism. It can be inferred that memory, for Stevens, is both the cover for self-deception and the shelter for self-protection. Besides, as a member of the so-called marginalized group, Steven’s identity as both the participant and observer of history could offer us a new channel to re-examine the authoritative “history”.

1 Introduction
Kazuo Ishiguro together with his works has attracted much attention from critics and academic field due to the special identity of the author himself and the connotation of his works. Memory, as one of the most obvious elements in all Ishiguro’s works, has become a most frequently discussed topic in the study of Ishiguro’s literature career. However, up to now, few have ever tried to comment on his works as well as those memories in his works from a New Historicism perspective. Through detailed reading, it is believed that many parts in The Remains of the Day can be reviewed in a different way from most of the current studies.
1.1 Kazuo Ishiguro and The Remains of the Day
Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Japan but brought up in England. He started his writing career in the 1980s with the publish of his first work, The Pale View of the Hill.
