Title Change, Choice and Responsibility—on the Youths in the Film Trainspotting
Abstract
Based on the ego identity theory, this paper endeavors to analyze how youths live when they meet the crisis in the film Trainspotting. The ego identity theory was first proposed by Erikson and was later developed by Marcia who classified it into four identity statuses. On the basis of Marcia's identity status model, the characters are classified into three types according to their different characters. They are Renton, Renton’s friends and Diane. Those young people idle their time away by taking drugs, having sex and robbing and stealing. They behave like with reasons in themselves and influences from the society. However, they change all the time with some choosing to live with responsibility while others still without responsibility.
By analyzing this special stage that the youths undergo, this paper aims to help the youths deal with the ego identity crisis better and advocate that people in society treat them with more tolerance and understanding.

1 Introduction
In the film Trainspotting, six young people show their indulgent behavior which are opposite to society common rules. However, it is found that there is a limited literature on these characters from psychological eyes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of youths’ change under the guidance of ego identity theory.
1.1 About the Film
A film that shows what makes heroin addictive without glorifying it, Trainspotting was one of the most popular and controversial British films of the 1990s.The film was adapted from Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting, and the film ratings prove that it is really successful. The title of the film refers to a hobby of sitting and watching trains pass by and is used as a metaphor for obsessive behavior and wasting time.
Mark Renton, a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton’s friends, Sick Boy, Spud, Begbie and Tommy, have no jobs and live by plunder. Sick Boy is a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond. Spud is a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman's debauched cousin. Begbie is a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. Tommy is person do harmless things but very fragile. Heroin, sex, violence and dacoity are their whole life. They have no targets and what they do every day is do nothing. They choose not to choose. Even BBC criticizes that “a movie that dares to challenge the audience”(Almar ix). One night, Renton runs into a girl called Diane. They make love, but soon Renton finds out that Diane is just a high school student. After brushing with the law too many times, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime. When Renton comes back to his old life, and as Tommy died, he feels something changed and gone forever. So when they earn a lot of money through selling drugs, he decides to betray his so-called friends and choose his life.            论电影《猜火车》中的青少年成长:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_2688.html
