On the Characterization of Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea

Abstract Ernest Miller Hemingway was a brilliant American writer in the history of contemporary literature. He wrote a lot of influential novels, such as A Farewell to Arms, Across the River and Into the trees and The Sun Also Rises. Among all his works, The Old Man and the Sea is the most renowned one, considered to be his representative.
This paper is intended to explore the characterization of Santiago, the protagonist in The Old Man and the Sea. The social background and Hemingway’s personal experience help a lot to shape this character, a man with hope for the future and endurance for loneliness. Hemingway’s writing devices like simple language and the application of symbolism also help to bring a more vivid picture of the characteristics of Santiago. The characterization of Santiago gives a lot of enlightenment to the man in modern society: man should fight with all the sufferings to love and cherish life when faced with miserable fate and cruel reality. 29767
