A Study on the Translation of Public Signs In Nanjing from the Perspective of the Functional Equivalence Theory Abstract: With the rapid growth of the domestic economy and the deepened reform and opening-up since the start of the 21st century, China is becoming more and more globalized. Many foreign companies and people come to China for investment, work and tourism. Bilingual public signs are therefore installed in most cities to make it more convenient for these foreigners to spend their time in China.
After the Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai World Expo as well as the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, great momentum has been made in the translation of public signs in many Chinese cities. However, erroneous and mistaken translation of public signs still exist to such an extent as to tarnish the country’s international image and soft strength. It is therefore a matter of urgency for the government and the society at large to regulate the errors in the English translation of public signs.
Based on the functional equivalence theory, this paper focuses on the definition and the research on the translation of public signs in China with particular attention given to the context in Nanjing. The author sums up the major types of the erroneous translations of public signs, analyzes the causes and puts forth specific suggestions towards the regulation of the English translation of public signs in Nanjing. 25956

功能对等理论指导下的南京市公示语翻译研究
摘要：21世纪以来，随着中国经济的不断发展和改革开放的不断深化，中国越来越国际化。越来越多的外国企业和个人来到中国观光、寻求商机甚至长驻。因此大多数城市都在使用双语公示语为外国友人提供便利。
虽然随着北京奥运会、上海世博会和南京青奥会的成功举办，国内城市公示语的汉英翻译有了长足的进步，然而在这些城市，公示语英译还是暴露出来诸多问题，极大地影响了中国的形象和软实力。因此，纠正公示语翻译中的错误，总结和归纳公示语的特性以及公共标识语的翻译策略，从而规范公示语使用，己是政府乃至全社会共同关注和函待解决的问题。
本文将以功能对等理论为指导，集中探讨公示语的定义、国内外研究现状以及南京市公示语翻译研究情况，实地探查南京市公共场所、交通、旅游景点等的公示语翻译实例，总结出南京市公示语翻译错误类型、错误原因，并提出针对性的对策及建议。
