A Comparative Study of Chinese Chivalrymanhood and Western Knightship

I. Introduction

In modern Chinese society, Chinese chivalrymanhood plays a significant role in our society, especially at a time when we promote truth, kindness and beauty and try to construct a harmonious society. So we can see that Chinese chivalrymanhood is an important part of Chinese national spirits and runs a long history. Meanwhile, in modern western societies, knightship remains alive in western people’s mind though medieval knight system died out centuries ago. As a cultural phenomenon and ethnic spirit of western societies, western knightship has attracted lots of attention of many scholars who all extol knightship and knight culture. Chinese chivalrymen and western knights are all brave, generous, and tend to help the poor, the old, women, and children. Those common characters lay the foundation for making a comparative study of Chinese chivalrymanhood and western knightship.
