I. Introduction

Human communication consists of verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication plays a very important role in the whole communication. Body language which contains postures, gestures, facial expressions, eye contacts and distance in conversation and so on is a main part of nonverbal communication. Psychologist David Abercrombie ever pointed out: “we speak with verbal organs but we talk with our body.” (Joseph 79). “Research shows that when people meet someone for the first time, only 7% of their initial impact on others is determined by the content of what they say; 93% of their message is made up of body language (55%) and the tone of their voice (38%)” (Birdwhistell 79). Body language is a kind of media through which people communicate with each other. Although we may not realize it, it helps us to get along with others and convey much information that cannot be transferred only by word. This shows the necessity and importance of body language.
Charles Darwin once said, “Human would gradually obtain communication capacity through body information” (Darwin 42). Body language is the earliest communicating system in the human history. It has been used to for human communication for a long time before the vocal and verbal language appeared. When we speak we complement the conversation with body language consciously or unconsciously, even we have stopped talking, we still use body to deliver our feeling, emotions and thoughts. It is easy to say that the body language seems more convenient and necessary than verbal language. 从体态语看中英文化差异:http://www.751com.cn/yingyu/lunwen_11064.html
